Historical Significance
Sangam Era
Sangam literature references state that ‘Thondi’, the administrative center of the Chera kings, was present-day Kadalundi.
Port City
Recorded as a major port city in the 2nd-century text ‘Periplus of the Erythraean Sea’.
During this period, active trade relations existed with foreign countries such as Rome and Arabia.
Commercial Hub
With the growth of trade in Kozhikode via Beypore Port, Chaliyam also developed into a prominent trade center.
Forest resources, spices, and silk garments from Malabar were exported from here.
Dutch Fort
By the 12th century, rule came under the Parappanad dynasty.
The Parappanad King granted land in Chaliyam to the Dutch for trade, where they constructed a fort.
This fort was later destroyed during battles with the Zamorin.
British Rule
By the mid-19th century, the British assumed control, though land tenure relationships remained largely unchanged until land reforms were introduced.
Railway & Trade
During British rule in 1861, the railway line was extended to Chaliyam to boost commercial trade.
When trade operations shifted to Kozhikode, the railway tracks were removed.
