Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary: Nature's Paradise Located at the confluence of the Kadalundi River with the Arabian Sea, the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is a haven providing shelter to over 60 species of migratory birds and countless native bird species. This sanctuary is situated approximately 25 kilometers from Kozhikode and 18 kilometers from the Kozhikode Railway Station. Kadalundi is indeed a treasure trove of biodiversity. Rich with serene mangrove forests, a beautiful coastline, and lush greenery, Kadalundi is an ideal destination for birdwatchers, nature lovers, and eco-tourism enthusiasts. The sanctuary includes beautiful groups of small islands spread over about 3 kilometers. Kadalundi has a rich history as the ancient headquarters of the Chera Dynasty. It was a major port during the Sangam period and later under the Parappanad Kingdom. Today, it has become a vital habitat for wildlife. Surrounding hills rising up to 660 feet above sea level offer expansive views of the river mouth, mangrove forests, and the sea, creating a tranquil setting. What makes Kadalundi special is its role as a winter refuge for migratory birds fleeing harsh climates in Siberia, Central Asia, and Europe. From November to April, exotic species like Terns, Gulls, Sandpipers, Herons, and Malabar Hornbills flock to this quiet sanctuary. Besides birds, otters, jackals, turtles, crabs, fishes, and snakes including Cobras and Kraits inhabit these wetlands. Visitors can enjoy boat rides, guided treks, or just lose track of time listening to the bird calls and watching the beauty of flocks flying in unison.
